Captain Morgan takes its name from 17th-century Welsh privateer Sir Henry Morgan, one of the most notorious and successful privateers in history, and certainly the most ruthless in the Spanish Main.
Introduced in 1944, the Seagram Company started producing rum under the name Captain Morgan Rum Company after Seagram CEO Samuel Bronfman acquired a distillery by the name of Long Pond from the Jamaican government. Among the buyers of raw rum from the Long Pond distillery was a Kingston pharmacy named Levy Brothers, who had been purchasing raw rum, adding medicinal herbs and spices, aging, and bottling it. Bronfman liked the rum product so much he bought the rights to it.
Today, Captain Morgan is one of the best-selling and most widely recognised rum brands available. |
