Cardhu, founded in 1824, is the only Scotch whisky distillery to have been pioneered by a woman. Initially run by Helen Cumming, producing whisky during the winter season on her husband's farm, she would sell bottles to passers-by from the farmhouse window. Helen's dedication to quality in the creation of Cardhu later caught the attention of John Walker who used much of the distillery's whisky in the creation of his Johnnie Walker blend.
By the end of the century, Cardhu was regarded as one of the top malt whisky distilleries in Scotland, a reputation that continues to this day. |
