Velvet Falernum is a recipe discovered by Sir John D. Taylor Mountjoy in 1890 at his plantation in Barbados. The story tells that he came across a young servant girl preparing the drink, taking the name Falernum from a misunderstanding because of the difference in their dialects and Velvet from the name of the young girl.
Today, Velvet Falernum is produced by Barbados' famous Foursquare Distillery, highly acclaimed for their wide range of rums. It is appropriate then, that Velvet Falernum is considered one of the finest liqueurs to use in a rum cocktail. |
