Vermouth started life, as many liqueurs did, as a traditionally medicinal drink. Unlike typical liqueurs though, it is crafted from a base of wine, fortified with spirit and infused with the flavours of botanicals. Vermouth largely falls into three types, dry white, sweet white (or bianco) and sweet red (or rosso). While it was originally created to be served as an aperitif, the world of cocktails has brought with it countless applications of Vermouth, not least of which the iconic Martini. |
