Produced using Caribbean rum (primarily from Guyana), this expression builds on the historic Royal Navy rum style, bottled at "gunpowder proof" (54.5% ABV). The name originates from naval practice, where rum was tested by soaking gunpowder - if it still ignited, the spirit was strong enough for sailors' daily rations. The base rum is aged in charred ex-bourbon oak barrels for several years before being infused with a controlled blend of spices. Unlike lighter spiced rums, the higher proof amplifies both extraction and perception of flavour, giving the spirit a dense, full-bodied structure. The spice profile includes elements such as vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, and banana, layered onto a molasses-heavy core.
The result is a style that sits between traditional Navy rum and modern spiced rum, combining historical blending inspiration with a more contemporary flavour profile. Compared to standard-strength spiced rums, it delivers significantly more intensity, with higher alcohol carrying both sweetness and spice more forcefully across the palate.
