Ron Zacapa Centenario was created to mark the centenary of the town of Zacapa, in Guatemala. The town was founded in 1876 as a railroad stop and to celebrate its hundredth anniversary in 1976 Guatemala's premier rum-producing company crafted a unique spirit: Ron Zacapa Centenario.
Where most rums use molasses as their base product, Zacapa instead uses first-press sugar cane juice to give their rum a sweeter, smoother flavour. After distillation, the rums are matured for between 6 and 25 years in a solera system, traditionally used for sherry production, in Zacapa's high altitude ageing facility, "The House Above the Clouds", where the cool temperature and low air pressure help intensify the flavours. |
