Stauning Bastard is a whirl-wind romance mixing the wind from the North Sea with the hot-blooded desert of Mexico. An illegitimate love affair with a gentle and exotic aftertaste. This double-distilled rye whisky is aged in old mezcal casks.
A rye whisky made exclusively using local ingredients, malted on the floor of the Stauning distillery and double-distilled in flame-fired pot stills. After a minimum of three years in new, toasted virgin American oak casks, it has been rounded off with 6 months ageing in old mezcal casks from Mexican Oro de Oaxaca. The result is an elegant love child without comparison anywhere else in this world.
Bastard is the second release from Stauning's Research Series. The Research Series is Stauning's playground, where they free themselves from the ties of tradition and make space for experimentation and innovation.
The nose exhibits sweet pipe tobacco smoke, raisins, oat biscuit, citrus, oak. To taste there's tobacco, vanilla, barley, dried fruit, cinnamon, brown sugar, molasses, shortbread, oak. The long sweet finish is slightly smoky, salty with brown sugar and hints of pepper.
Being unfiltered and not chill-filtered some residue may appear in the bottle.
