Wyndham
Wyndham Estate was founded in 1827, when George Wyndham emigrated from Wiltshire to start a new life in Australia and acquired a property on the banks of the Hunter River. Sourcing cuttings from across the colony, Wyndham began experimenting to find which grape varieties would grow best in the region. Of all his experiments, Wyndham's Shiraz vines flourished far better than the rest. Shiraz was well suited to flourish in the hot, wet conditions of the Hunter Valley. This discovery led Wyndham on the path to success as other followed in his footsteps. Today, Shiraz makes up 44% of Australia's red wine production, and it's all thanks to George Wyndham. |
